Why You Should Just Ignore Fad Diets (Part 1)

Fad diets are just that – they’re fads, and they’re diets, in the corrupted form of the word.  They come and go with the whims of celebrity endorsements.  Worse, they usually advocate some unusual or downright absurd eating practices.  If you want a real natural weight loss solution, then ignore them.

Why Bother With Fad Diets Anyway?

True, a lot of these fad diets will cause some fat loss at the beginning.  Unfortunately, this is usually accompanied by muscle loss, and those in the know understand that losing muscle can make fat loss harder.  Yet that is not the biggest problem.  The biggest problem with fad diets is that for the most part, those who lose weight gain it back, if not put on even more!

The extreme focus on certain foods can also lead to unhealthy eating habits on top of nutrient deficiencies.  They are usually so strict that the average person will tire soon and go a little mad over it.  They also do not promote healthy living in the long run.

Fad Diets Will Only Give You Transitory Benefits, Profound Damages

These fad diets are just modified forms of fasting, and thus are doomed to fail.  They work on a short-term mindset, and thus the benefits you gain are just as transitory.  Worse, they often cause damage to various organs like the liver, kidneys, and intestines, because of the excessively reduced volume.  People who regularly turn to these diets overlook other health factors, and they also don’t burn fat in the long run, so just ignore fad diets.

If it is lifelong natural fat loss and a healthy body you want, then you just need to listen to good nutritional advice.  Some of this may sound like the things your mom told you, but it is totally right.

Nutrition Is What You Need

nutritionEat your vegetables – especially the green ones.  Limit your sugary foods and junk foods, but you can have a little bit once in a while as a treat just so you don’t go binging all of a sudden.  Try to get a balance of the different food groups as much as possible.

The combination of all these bits of advice produces a holistic eating philosophy, reducing cravings and increasing satisfaction.  Cravings can mean that your body lacks some nutrient, and so it heightens urges to eat in order to compensate.  You can get all the nutrients you need, plus fiber, and you will feel satisfied and can avoid overeating.  A balanced diet is also a natural metabolism booster, allowing you to burn fat faster and also to avoid many lifestyle-related diseases.

Nutrition is not just to maintain your body but also to improve your current condition, and so eating right is just as important to achieving a lean and fit body.  By making permanent changes to your diet, you can radically change your long-term health.

Choose nutrient-rich foods; eat in moderation, and exercise.  You can easily ignore fad diets and achieve even better effects by choosing a long-term solution.  In the next part of the article, we will discuss how to make that transition to a life of fitness, right eating, and round-the-clock fat burning.

  • Great read Gee.

My children have been coming home recently from school talking about the Healthy Food Pyramid. I am very glad that they are talking about nutrition also at school. Yes I do agree that our diet is a choice for life, though sometimes things come along like Easter very soon with chocolate and hot cross buns. All fun in moderation.

    Thanks again Gee.

  • Good to see some sound advice Gee,

Fad diets should be ignored as you say. Our ancestors knew a lot more about food than what we do today.

I also have found that by eating a diet rich in raw foods (especially greens, as you say), I no longer even crave junk food. I have learned that if you remove processed sugar from your diet then you will not want for it or junk. I have to say that is stands true.

My kids are growing up learning about food from what I tell them. My 3 year old knows that most of the food in the supermarket is junk and that it works against your body as your body tries to work FOR you. I hope they will pass this knowledge on to their own children. That is the least I can do for my kids.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Well put Gee – making a few adjustments to our daily lives such as watching what we’re putting into our bodies and how much, and making time for a bit of exercise is all it really takes to make a huge difference to our health and well-being. Overcoming our past conditioning and habits is the hard part.
