Ever wonder why your friends may be taking a step or two away from you when you’re talking? Or maybe your boss prefers to communicate to you – and only you – by email. Before you panic, take a deep breath – and check how it smells on the exhale. There’s a good chance your breath may be in need of a bit of a tune up!
Bad breath can be caused by a number of things, from your mouth to your large intestine. No matter where the issue begins, there are several bad breath home remedies that you may be able to find simply by opening your fridge door.
Cure Your Halitosis with some H2O
That’s right, something as simple and free as water can help you with your bad breath blues. Dry mouth is one of the leading causes for bad breath, so for a quick fix, sip and swish some water around in your mouth.
Parsley: More than Just a Garnish!
Ever wonder why restaurateurs choose parsley as a garnish in their restaurants? On more than one occasion, I have used these natural herb remedies and popped a few sprigs of parsley into my mouth from my dinner plate to freshen my breath. An alternative is making your very own mouthwash solution. After boiling two cups of water, add a few sprigs of chopped parsley and 2-3 whole cloves. Stir the mouthwash every few minutes while it is still cooling, and, once cool, it is ready to be used as a natural and effective mouthwash.
Nature’s Little Bad Breath Home Remedies: Fenugreek Seeds
Many people absolutely swear by fenugreek to cure their halitosis, claiming that these seeds when used as bad breath home remedies are more effective than commercial brands of gum, toothpaste and mouth rinse that are on the market today. When preparing fenugreek tea, place one tsp. of seeds to approximately half a liter of cold water. Place the pot on the stove, and allow it to simmer slowly for fifteen minutes over low heat. Once strained, sip and enjoy!
Cheese, Please!
Believe it or not, but some of the best bad breath home remedies are dairy products, though beware: they can also be a source for bad breath too. If you’re looking for a quick way to kill off that bad breath, choose a soft or mild cheese to bite into (avoid the more strong and “stinky” cheeses!) to clear up any tartar and less than favorable breath.
Avocado: Not just for Guacamole!
This fruit offers numerous health benefits, making avocados an excellent choice amongst all of the bad breath home remedies. Most bad breath remedies work on freshening up your mouth, but avocado moves right in on the source and helps slough away any intestinal bugs and bacteria that are causing you grief. Just be sure to have only a bite or two, as too much will actually have the reverse affect on your breath.
The best thing about these natural remedies is that they can all be found for under $5 and they’re good for your health. So if you’re finding that brushing with toothpaste and flossing with waxy minty string isn’t helping your bad breath problem, give these 5 bad breath home remedies a try!

Some of the bad breath issues are not even caused by the foods you eat. I think for some it is genetic. Keeping mints handy is probably the best bet. Some have vitamins, so it isnt like eating ‘bad for you’ candy all day.

Hi Gee
Great article to keeping my breath fresh. My whole family loves avacardo and I knew it was healthy for us though I never knew it was good for our breath as well.
What tips have you got for the breath after a coffee with girlfriends. I do like the occassional coffee though it always leaves an uncomfortable taste in my mouth afterwards.
Thanks Mr Total Wellbeing

Great tips Gee. Sure to be very helpful for many people. Another one that works well is to suck on some whole cloves and spit them out when done.
Cheers, Eileen.

Another remedy for under $5 is Kellogg’s All-Bran. In my experience the worst bad breath is caused by constipation of the large intestine. Regular meals of All-Bran will help clear the bowel. The best short term cure is enzyme therapy, and you can do it for under $5 per day but you need to keep it up for a week or two. This is more thorough and tends to clean out those pockets of waste matter that bran misses. The best long term cure is Emotional Freedom Techniques. You can still get a free DIY manual so I guess this is under $5 too.
